My name is Parker Manning. I am a double major in Political Science and History. I study Political Science for the Army and because I want to study law and work in international relations and politics, but I study history because it is my one of my hobbies. World War Two is my favorite war to learn about because I still talk to my grandfather about his experiences in the Navy during WWII. I really enjoy getting to study different cultures and how they handled going to war differently. It is amazing to me the diversity in allies that fought together against Germany, Italy, and Japan. Both of my grandfathers fought in the Pacific, my maternal grandfather was in the Navy at Tinian, Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Chi Chi Jima, and my paternal grandfather was at New Guinea and in the Philippines. The contrast between the war in the Pacific and the war in Europe and North Africa is also fascinating. It is neat to see how the American forces performed better as time went on and they gained experience. I also believe that Americans today take for granted that we won the war and have a powerful military, because there were several instances where the United States performed poorly and lost many men. I know that today’s culture would not be able to handle the war the same way that the generation that fought in World War 2 did. The Great Depression fueled the men and women who served in the military, and the adversity of the decade before the war hardened the men who fought.
